Madagascar Madagascar has been isolated for some 165 million years. This has resulted in most of its plants & animals evolving in isolation and producing a high level of endemism in the country’s fauna & flora. There are 257 bird species, 110 being endemic. There are five endemic families and one endemic sub-family, examples of which should be found on a summer tour to the island. Lemurs are the most famous mammal group found in Madagascar and with 51 different species identified, they represent a third of the world’s primates. Many birds and most lemurs are associated with the forests that are today so exploited. Less than 15% of original forest remains.
