New Zealand
Aotearoa, or New Zealand, was a land of birds – a unique evolutionary island where ground dwelling birds filled the niches normally occupied by mammals. Groups of Takahe grazed on the alpine tussock grasslands while the now-extinct flightless Moas browsed in the dense forests. The lack of mammalian predators led to the evolution of flightless birds such as the endemic Kiwi.
Seabirds in New Zealand are excellent, with about 50% of the world’s Penguins breeding in the region and an accessible mainland based breeding colony of the endemic Royal Albatross in South Island. An intensive conservation effort is having a significant positive impact on the preservation of the approximately 50 endemic bird species in the North & South Islands. Few other countries have native ecosystems that have suffered so severely from the recent introduction of exotic fauna & flora.
However, this does not detract from the exceptional natural history and the magnificent scenery that New Zealand has to offer. Scenery ranges from pristine rain forests, to active volcanoes, glaciers and clear blue skies. The low population density, unpolluted environment and efficient tourist infrastructure makes travel comfortable, safe & easy. Our tours optimise both wildlife and scenic activities in a range of habitats available in the area.
